All Children Deserve Montessori Education
Nearly ten years ago, a group of Humboldt Park parents united around the common dream to bring Montessori education to our Chicago neighborhood. This small group of folks believed in an education that focused on the whole child, developing social and emotional skills and empowering children to think creatively in their studies. They knew very little about running a school, but they believed in the importance of Montessori education not only for their children, but for as many children in Humboldt Park as possible.
After several years of work, Humboldt Park Montessori was born as a 501(c)3 organization and then opened its first classroom in 2015 with eight children. Our school follows four guiding principles:
We trust nature as a great teacher. Through exploration in nature, children get to breathe in the world around them, splashing in puddles, digging in dirt, watching birds fly overhead, study snowflakes under a microscope, and sense the peace and freedom of the natural world.
We believe in the power of words. Montessori education emphasizes hands-on learning, so that children are touching and moving letters about - literally building words as they build literacy. Books and reading are the tools for all people to become life-long learners.
We believe in the practice of peace. Nothing is more important than the practice of peace in our community. Whether a teacher is guiding a child to carry flowers with tenderness to create a beautiful arrangement or children are taking time out from a group project to negotiate a conflict, we believe that peaceful children grow into peace-makers who change their world.
We honor each child’s learning journey. Our teaching practices begin with respect for the child and where they are developing and growing. Our classrooms are dynamic places of spontaneous activity, inspired by the children. The children are the authors of their own journeys, and the teachers serve as guides along the way.
“We shall walk together on this path of life, for all things are part of the universe, and are connected with each other to form one whole unity.”
— Maria Montessori
